Sala São Paulo hosts an unprecedented benefit show on 16 August at 19h bringing together prominent figures from Brazil's musical theatre history. "Um לugar Para Nós – da Broadway ao Brasil" commemorates 90 years of Congregação Israelita Paulista (CIP) and explores intersections of culture, memory, immigration and music, highlighting Jewish artists' contributions to global musical theatre and their influence on Brazil's stage.
Performers include Alessandra Maestrini, Bruna Guerin, Giulia Nadruz, Gottsha, Kiara Sasso, Samantha Schmütz, Saulo Vasconcelos and Soraya Ravenle, with special appearances by Marcos Veras, Felipe Grytz and Avi Bursztein. Dan Stulbach hosts the evening, accompanied by São Paulo Big Band and Orchestra. The programme honours Jewish composers who made Broadway a global phenomenon: Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman and Burt Bacharach. The repertoire features classics from West Side Story, Chicago, Cabaret, Funny Girl, Hello, Dolly!, My Fair Lady, Yentl and Fiddler on the Roof. The production also pays tribute to Victor Berbara and Oscar Ornstein, pioneers who introduced Brazil to major Broadway-inspired productions in the 1950s.
General direction by Gustavo Barchilon, musical direction by Antonio de Arruda Ribeiro, script and curation by Claudio Erlichman, lighting by Maneco Quinderé, costumes by Fábio Namatame, and production by BARHO Produções. The title "Um לugar Para Nós" references Somewhere from West Side Story, with the Hebrew letter ל (Lamed) replacing "L" to symbolise learning, purpose and spiritual elevation.
Produced by Congregação Israelita Paulista (CIP) and Ministério da Cultura. Sponsored by Itaú, Bemol, Rosset, Banco Safra, Tricostyl, Smart Storage and Aurora.
