Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet
About the event
EarthSonic, the European Space Agency, ARTIS, and ADE Arts & Culture bring science and art together in Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet. Artists and scientists transform Earth observation data from ESA satellites into audiovisual performances and a panel discussion in the ARTIS Planetarium in Amsterdam. This event is part of Amsterdam Dance Event 2026. Science made audible
For more than fifty years, satellites have been observing the Earth and documenting how the climate is changing. In Signals: Hearing a Changing Planet, you use that data not only to look at, but also to listen to. Artists and scientists collaborate to convert Earth observation data from the European Space Agency into sound and image. In this way, science becomes an experience you feel.
Audiovisual performances and a panel discussion
The program opens with Redshift: Slow Down and Reconnect with Time, a 20-minute acoustic exploration of the planet by Tom Middleton and Gavin Starks. This is followed by audiovisual performances by Halina Rice and Natural Symphony, both in collaboration with the European Space Agency. The program concludes with a panel discussion with Joey Dean, Ruth Daniel, Jamie Franklin, and ESA scientist Dirk Schuettemeyer.
Location: the ARTIS Planetarium
The event takes place in the ARTIS Planetarium in Amsterdam, a place naturally connected to the universe and Earth from a broader perspective. This setting enhances the experience of the performances and the subsequent conversation. Are you interested? Keep an eye on the website for ticket information as soon as it becomes available.
