Opened in 1865 as Moorgate Street, Moorgate station later formed part of the first extension of the Metropolitan line, paving the way for the ‘Deep Tube’. This guided tour takes you into the maze of disused tunnels and abandoned tracks that were left behind by almost 160 years of re-designs and station upgrades. You’ll walk along disused tracks, spot original passenger corridors complete with vintage glass tiles and posters, and you’ll discover ingenious repurposes in response to the needs of the growing capital. Step behind the scenes Gain rare access to corridors that have been hidden from public view for decades. Explore the original passageways of the City and South London Railway, still lined with Victorian glass tiles from 1900, and spot the vintage posters that remain in place. Walk along disused tracks Journey into the Moorgate ‘Catacombs’ section, located directly underneath The Barbican Estate. Walk alongside the disused railway tracks of the City Widened Line and hear about the redevelopments that took place in the area during the second half of the 20th century. Learn about Moorgate’s rich history Uncover Moorgate’s role as a terminus for multiple railways, including the Metropolitan Railway and the Great Northern and City Railway. Discover how Moorgate became the expansion point for the world’s first deep tube, the City and South London Railway, which opened in 1890 and revolutionised underground travel. Explore its hidden past as a freight terminal Hear fascinating stories about how Moorgate served as a freight terminal for decades and see how its long-abandoned areas have been ingeniously repurposed to serve London’s modern needs, particularly through modernisation efforts in the 1920s.
