Amsterdam is making history by hosting WorldPride Amsterdam for the first time. WorldPride is a major celebration and event for people from the LGBTQIA+ community. Its goal is to raise awareness of equal rights and visibility worldwide. The WorldPride name is owned by the organization InterPride. Pride Amsterdam has been a member of InterPride since 2011, which is why the capital is authorized to host the event. World Pride On April 1, 2001, the Netherlands made world history by opening civil marriage to everyone, finally allowing same-sex couples to exchange vows. It's been 25 years since that happened, and many countries have followed suit, but there's still much work to be done to achieve equal rights for everyone. The first WorldPride was in Rome in 2000. After that, it was Jerusalem, London, Toronto, Madrid, New York, Copenhagen, and Sydney. In 2025, Washington was the place to be. Not only far away, but also in Europe and our own Kingdom, LGBTQIA+ people are often still treated unequally. In many countries, previously achieved rights are even under threat. That's why it's important that the LGBTQIA+ community remains visible and makes it clear that we want equal rights. The opening up of marriage has changed a lot, but it's happening slowly. The 25th anniversary is an opportunity to re-inspire and reconnect the world with a wide range of events and activities. Accessibility Accessibility is important to WorldPride Amsterdam, ensuring everyone can participate. That's why many activities are free, and money isn't an issue. But that's not enough. We also do our best to ensure everyone feels welcome.
