Made in Austria. Furniture Design 1948–1960

Vienna Furniture Museum

About the event

The exhibition showcases new furniture designed to represent the Second Republic on state occasions, chic furnishings for the emerging espresso bar culture, and modern interiors for all levels of society. In the 1950s, modern furniture design was still predominantly in the hands of architects—the exhibition features designs by renowned Austrian architects. Furthermore, Austrian furniture design was characterized by high-quality craftsmanship, sustainable materials, a variety of forms, and good design—even in affordable products. While mid-century design from Italy, Scandinavia, and the United States remains widely recognized today, the distinctive features and qualities of post-war Austrian furniture design are to be brought back into the spotlight.
