Journey through 160 years of history of the Underground on this exclusive guided tour. Explore closed-off parts of the station including passenger corridors closed to the public for over 75 years. When it opened on 10 January 1863 as part of the Metropolitan Railway, Baker Street was home to the launch of a revolutionary idea – carrying passengers beneath Victorian London’s congested streets. Cutting a 90-minute journey to just 20 minutes, the ‘Met’ revolutionised travel in the city and paved the way for Metro systems across the world. This guided tour retraces over 160 years of history, starting from the early days of Victorian underground steam travel to the busy station of 10 platforms that Baker Street has become today. Along the way, you’ll be taken into the closed-off parts of the station, sometimes just feet away from unsuspecting passengers. Uncover time capsules Access parts of the station that are usually closed to the public, including passenger corridors that haven’t seen the public in over 75 years, but are still complete with original tiles and poster fragments. Step behind the scenes Discover the secret part of the station that staff refer to as ‘the Cathedral’, get a secret view onto the Bakerloo and Metropolitan line platforms and trains, and see where the Lost Property Office was originally based. Retrace the early days of the Underground Find out how the idea of underground rail travel first came about in the 19th century and discover why it made sense for Baker Street to be at the heart of this project. Hear first-hand testimonials from Victorian passengers on what they thought of their first underground journey, and how it was reported in the press of the time. Discover the former headquarters of London Underground Hear how Baker Street served not only passengers, but also London Underground staff over the years. Find out what staff recreational clubs and facilities were based there, get a glimpse at a former rifle range, and hear exclusive testimonials from those who worked there along the years.
